The Ozarks Chapter of the Missouri Archaeological Society will meet at the Center for Archaeological Research. Lyle Sparkman, Trustee, will present "The First Word: An Archaeologically-based Alternative Argument on the Origin of Writing in Europe."
The origin of writing connected to literacy in Western Civilization has long been held to have begun with the Sumerians in what is now Eastern Iraq. However, archaeology has shown the existence of an older script in Southeastern Europe. This presentation will explore pre-Indo-European (Neolithic) Europe and the possibility that writing did not originate in Sumer. It also asks a question, "What was the first written word?" Speculation using both Sumerian and European contexts will be presented in addressing that question.
